In what was definitely the most gruelling Ironman SA event since its inception, the Windy City lived up to its name, dishing up a vicious Westerly gale. Conditions were further compounded by the accompanying intermittent downpours and cold weather with the swim starting shortly after the morning rain subsided.
The inclement weather did however not prevent the athletes from participating in the 8th Spec- Savers Ironman SA event. KFC Ironman4thekidz founders, Garth Wright and Gary Stephenson were among 70 charity athletes who participated in bright orange vests in order to raise funds for 11 beneficiaries that the Charity supports yearly. Nicolas Gracco de Lay, fresh from his trip through Africa, from France also lined up for his first Ironman event in KFC Ironman4thekidz colours.
Garth and Gary, who started raising funds for the underprivileged kids’ of the Eastern Cape back in 2005, again both participated in the event and were thrilled that the KFC Ironman 4 The Kidz Charity had once again achieved its ever increasing yearly objective.
Raising 1.5 million is no easy task but the Charity had managed to secure a total of R1 509 000 and acknowledged that this could never have been done without the commitment of the individual sponsors and their athletes. Credit and heartfelt thanks are also given to the spirit of Spec Savers, Ironman, KFC, Software AG, the business community and the general public who continue to support the charity even in a very difficult economic climate.
With this generosity and support the charity can and will continue to make a difference for the kids in need.
